TOLEDO SLAYED BY MICHIGAN BUCKS, 3-0

Minor League Soccer Team Just One Game Behind Fort Wayne

Jacob Peterson (Portage, MI) ignited Michigan with a goal in his first start for the Premier Development League (PDL) Bucks at the 20th minute of the game, leading to a 3-0 win over the Toledo Slayers late Thursday night in Perrysburg, OH. The Bucks (5-2-1; 16 points) are now three points behind Great Lakes Division leaders, the Fort Wayne Fever (6-2-1; 19 pts.) and two points behind the Indiana Invaders and the Kalamazoo Kingdom (each 6-3; 18 pts.) with a game in hand. Great Lakes Division teams, which are awarded 3 points for a victory and 1 point for a tie, play a 16-game regular season. Michigan faces Fort Wayne and Kalamazoo at home next week.

Following two strong performances off the bench, Peterson proved worthy of a starting job. "Jacob has really given us a lift - he's like a Detroit Piston. He dishes the ball quickly and moves well without the ball offensively and works hard defensively," said coach Don Gemmell. Knox Cameron (University of Michigan) and Ryan McMahen (Michigan State University) also scored for the Bucks, while Jeff Wiese (Oakland University) earned the shutout in net. Cameron leads Michigan with 10 goals.

The Bucks have lost four players this month: John Minagawa-Webster (Monroe/Michigan State University) to Japan, Stephen Armstrong with a torn ACL, Simon Omekanda (Rochester) to a severe hand burn in a freak home accident and Ryan Rzepka (Novi/Oakland University) to an internship. Only Rzepka is expected back next week. "We have played some new guys in the past couple of games and they have stepped up. I still believe our depth is our greatest strength." Aaron Hohlbein (University of Wisconsin), McMahen and Doug Rice (Brighton/Oakland University) and Adam Bruh (University of Michigan) were among the new players praised by Gemmell. "We have an opportunity to take first place back (by playing two teams ahead of the Bucks in the standings) next week, so we are pretty focused," said Gemmell. Fort Wayne comes to Hurley Field in Berkley on Tuesday, June 22nd and Kalamazoo visits on Thursday the 24th. Both games kick-off at 7:30pm.
