Long Island Rough Riders Stand In Way of Possible Detroit-area MLS Match-Up

The Mid Michigan Bucks were given a bye into the Second Round of the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup Tournament, but there they must face (Division III) Pro Select League (PSL) Champion Long Island Rough Riders. The metropolitan-Detroit based Premier Development League (PDL) squad was selected to host. The game will likely be played at Berkley's Hurley Field on June 25th, but details are still being finalized with the United States Soccer Federation (USSF) and should be announced early next week.

"The bad news is that we have to play the Rough Riders. The good news is our fans get to see us play the Rough Riders," said Bucks co-owner and general manager, Jim Duggan. Last season's PSL Championship was Long Island's second - the first coming in 1995, led by (US National Team goalkeeper) Tony Meola. "Their 1995 championship was actually the first USL game I ever witnessed. We know we will be in over our heads playing a team of their caliber, but that's the point (of being in the Cup)," said Duggan. An upset win could bring the first-ever MLS game to Detroit (the Bucks hosted MLS teams twice previously in Saginaw, their home from 1996 to 2001).

The two PDL teams receiving byes will join the four First Round winners in facing the six top PSL squads on June 15th. The Third Round (scheduled for July 16th) will consist of six Second Round winners, eight A-League teams and two Major League Soccer (MLS) sides paired up geographically. The remaining eight MLS teams enter in the Fourth Round (scheduled for August 6th) against the eight Third Round victors. Fans can get more details about the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup, including match-ups for the first two rounds, on the Competition Page at
